Solo gamedev with running clock

Posted by Rojatzo - 2 hours ago

I've tried to become a gamedev for about two years now. Between school and other interests which catch my attention, I've never really managed to complete a project, but right now I'm trying to change that.

This post serves more as a way for me to vent rather than some sort of DevBlog, since I haven't been promoting anything as of writing this post, but I digress.

I'm a student, 25, trying to graduate after doing everything in my power to avoid it. I have a lot of privileges, life is not really getting in the way of my goals other than myself. I guess what I'm trying to say is that there is no obstacle greater than my lack of will to finish every new project I begin (and I'm not only talking about videogames).

That being said, I wanted to speak to people that have tried doing solo-dev games before, succesfull or not, and ask them about their experiences. Have you ever struggled with the feeling of fleeting time while trying to finish something you love doing? How do you avoid losing motivation for it due to not seeing any results? To those who managed to publish small indie games, where did you find a bit of support that could make you feel small accomplishments that pushed you forward into accomplishing your game? Did you make constant blog posts or youtube videos?

I need to feel that I have the tyniest bit of support that I can't find in my day to day.

It's hard to push forward when school isn't showing satisfying results, but even harder when the things I ACTUALLY feel proud of isn't even being supported by those around me (be it family or friends). I know asking for motivation from strangers on the internet is dumb.... very dumb. I guess I'm just desperate.

The game is not even a third of the way done, so sharing it would probably just embarass me, but it would be nice if anyone reading this can tell me otherwise. (I guess?)

Anyway... sorry for the downer post. Thanks for reading this far and I hope we can talk about this more if you feel somewhat the same.
